About “backpacking” In Europe…but Not Really Backpacking, Just Staying In Cheap Hotels/hostels?

and bumbling our ways around Great Britain, France, Italy, Spain, etc. (i.e. Not Eastern Europe). Is a budget of 75 euros/day (about 100 dollars U.S.) reasonable for my husband and myself? We’re in our 20s and capable of being happy in less than stellar conditions (but no rats, please!). Thanks for any advice!

You’ll need €20-25/day each for hostels/guesthouses/bed & breakfasts. If you want to stay in the same room or bed, the latter two options are best although some hostels have private rooms. Even cheap hotels in major Western European cities usually cost €75+ per night.
If you buy all your food at a grocery store and prepare it yourself, you should budget at least €15/day. You’ll need €15-30 each if you plan to eat street food and in cheap restaurants.
Then you have to consider travel within and between cities, and visiting attractions, so I think your budget is a bit low for 2 people. It’s possible to do on €75/day, but it wouldn’t be a comfortable trip even for backpackers.

Dont be afraid to go east….the places I went have to rate as my favouriites eg Croatia, Czech Republic, Slovenia…..Prague is a wonderful city and in my top 3 and there is another great little town called Cesky Krumulov ( which I have seen in at least 2 movies). THe east is cheaper and a relief to the budget as the west is rather expensive.
I will give you some wesites for hostels so have a look and check out prices ( and times of the year vary)

accommodation can vary…if you are willing to share in a dorm it will be cheaper and can be 10-20euros a night..depending on where you are staying.
Food can vary in where you are eating. In an average resteraunt you will pay around 20euros per meal I guess but it will vary. Then you have transport and again it varies. I know my travel in Prague for a weeks was around 12GBP whereas in Paris it was 20euros or so, if not more as it only was for within 2 zones ( so there are additional costs of say 10euros to get the airport)
try www.eurolines.com for buses around europe, you can get some cheap ones and you can travel at night which saves on accommodation costs.
trains in Italy go with www.trenitalia.it ( then click on english). You pay for distance there so short journeys are reasonable and longer journeys get more enpensive.
THe UK will be pricey in accommdaiton and transport. www.nationalexpress.co.uk ( which is associated with eurolines) can give you some options for buses which will be cheaper.
try also www.skyscanner.net for some cheap flights if you go to the right place at the right time!
Then of course you have entry into places…some are free, some ok and some things will cost you 20-30euros…..you can also do day tours which may work out ok as they often include lunch on full days as well as transport, entry into things..try www.viator.com for options. I did one to pompeii, versailles ( 1/2 day)…pompeii was great.
